I was recently taught about hybridizationmolecular orbital theory and bond order. We came across the equation for bond order and I was wondering what the purpose of dividing by 2.:
$$\text{Bond order} = \frac{\text{Number of bonding electrons} - \text{Number of antibonding electrons}}{2}$$
I am not able to find a situation in which the division of 2 would affect the answers.was wondering, what is the purpose of dividing by 2?
