As an example, consider a change at constant volume then $\Delta V =0$ and so by the first law $q=\Delta U$. But $\Delta U$ is a function of state and q a path variable so how can this be? The answer is that the path is fixed so q is now a path function and should be changed, say, to $q_V$ . So the possibilities for confusion are many.
