Mar 15, 2016 at 22:01 comment added MaxW "Strong acids: weak conjugate bases. Strong bases: weak conjugate acids." This is really more of fact that could be derived from pKa values than an "explanation." In aqueous solution: $$\mathrm{pKa + pKb = 14}$$
