I'm sorry if this is a stupid question, I'm just starting out with electrochemical cells, but what do you mean the redox reaction would happen right then and there ? Suppose I'm working with Zn and Cu electrodes, Can the electrons that are a result of the oxidation of zinc atoms move in the solution and reach the Cu ions ?
