This tag should be applied to questions concerning acid and base reactions. An acid is capable of donating a hydron/ proton (Brønsted acid) or capable of forming a covalent bond with an electron pair (Lewis acid). A base on the other hand is a chemical species/ molecular entity having an available pair of electrons capable of forming a covalent bond with a hydron/ proton (Brønsted base) or with the vacant orbital of some other species (Lewis base).

How can we tell if an ion is amphiprotic

Good question. If you show these three ions (as written) to a super intelligent being person who never took chem or physics, they will not be able to tell you which ion is amphoteric. In short, there …

How do we know if a compound is amphoteric or not?

Sorry to tell you but your teacher's opinion is not right, just because the word "react" is not enough. Usually you label oxides as "amphoteric". You may say that if an oxide reacts with an acid and f …

n-Factor of phosphorous acid

I am afraid the answer if your teacher or textbook has told that the n-factor of phosphoric acid is 2, they are teaching it the wrong way. The concept of equivalent weight is totally dependent on how …

How to tell if an acid disassociate completely or partially?

The equations don't tell you the complete story, just as by looking at an equation one cannot predict the boiling point of HCl, in the same way we cannot say how many HCl or acetic acid molecules are …

Do acids stay acid forever?

So acids stay acids forever? You know a company markets that diamonds are forever. Well may be not, a diamond is not thermodynamically stable. It may wish to turn back into graphite if you someho …

Can a previously neutral mix of chemicals become acidic or alkaline somehow?

I think the source of confusion is connecting the general notion of neutrality with pH=7.0. pH is just a scale for representing the concentration of hydrogen ions in water =-log [$\ce{H+}$]. Unfortuna …

Two monoprotic acids vs. one diprotic acid

Your intuition is right, because a potentiometric sensor (a $\mathrm{pH}$ probe in your case) does not know the source of hydrogren ions, it only senses the presence of hydrogen ions. The same is true …

Can acid-base reaction occur if two compounds (one acidic and one basic) are added to each o...

The key question we must ask ourselves is which definition of acids and bases we wish to employ. Since acid and base is a man-made label for chemical compounds, then we must familiarize ourselves with …

Difficulty in understanding ionisation of sulphuric acid

Removing alkaline stain with acid

The problem is that there are not many alkaline stains you will find on household objects. Professor Robert Winston just did a demo for attracting attention of the public towards science (so-called ou …

Oxidation of Vitamin C

Think of oxidation in a classical sense for a minute or so. Oxidation is the addition of oxygen to a molecule or it can also mean the removal of hydrogen. If you carefully look at the structure of asc …

How to determine the product from my attempt of HOCl synthesis

Ryan, sorry your approach to generate the desired compound is not the best one. This post also shows the problems with the concept of an "accepted" answer on StackExchange. The answer is also wrong an …

Why is H2SO4 a good dehydrating agent while other strong acids are not?

As pointed out by Maurice and myself, the argument provided in the answer by iad22agp is rather incorrect. Sulfuric acid is a dehydrating agent just because it is available in concentrated form wherea …

Do Lewis acids and bases turn change colour of litmus

You should keep in mind that the concept of acid-bases is not restricted to water. Lewis acid definition is applicable to gaseous, aqueous and non-aqueous systems. Consequently, all Bronsted-Lowry aci …
