so I was trying to draw SO3-2 Lewis structure and when I looked it up on the internet I found it different to the one I've drawn

enter image description here

This is the one I found on the internet, mine was without a double bond. I don't know why there is a double bond, without the double bond you would still satisfy the octet rule for all the atoms and we will get a formal charge of -2 if we draw it both ways, so is it just a resonance structure?

$\begingroup$ It's just old way, yours is newer and more accurate as you say. It's just that like half century ago guys saw "octet expansion" everywhere they could and now "nowhere" is considered accurate. $\endgroup$ – Mithoron Mar 2 '18 at 1:32

  • $\begingroup$ "mine was without a double bond." You did have a coordinate bond. In that case, all oxygen atoms would have a formal charge of -1 instead. And sulphur would have a +1 formal charge instead. $\endgroup$ – Gaurang Tandon Mar 2 '18 at 1:46
