Diospyrol is present in Diospyros mollis which is used to make black dye. What is the chemistry and structure of this black dye?

$\begingroup$ Two possibilities occur to me. Firstly oxidation of one or more phenols to quinones, secondly radical-mediated aryl-aryl coupling. Or both. $\endgroup$

$\begingroup$ The black color suggests at least some degree of polymerization, likely via the radical mediated coupling mentioned above. Probably a mess of reactions going on that produces no specific single final structure $\endgroup$
