I noticed that when I attempted to dissolve some pure alpha glucose powder in water, it would become hard and clump at the bottom of the beaker if I dumped it into the beaker all at once. It was almost as hard as stone; I even broke a beaker in the process of trying to remove it. To prevent clumping, I had to add the glucose gradually on magnetic stirring. I can't think of a reason why glucose powder behaves like this.
