Can I apply group theory to the $\sigma$ orbitals of benzene? I have already seen it be applied to the $\pi$ orbitals, but I can't find an application to the $\sigma$ in literature. In this case, could I find the characters of the representation with which the $\sigma$ orbitals are transformed and decompose it in the irreducible representatios of the point group of benzene (that is the $D_{6h}$)?
