In my book of reference, it isn't clearly explained what the mechanism is, it just tells that ortho and para direction of benzene diazonium cation occurs. So please, elaborate. Also, why doesn't lone the oxygen and nitrogen's lone pair in phenol and aniline respectively don't attack the diazonium cation directly?
