Originally I had thought that Bents Rule stated that more electronegative atoms prefer to stay in the axial position. But later I came to know that this works only for Trigonal Bipyramidal Geometry.

The actual statement that can help predicting positions of atom is given as "The orbital occupying more space around the central atom will have more s character"

Could anyone reason out why this is true?
