While performing the dry heating test during the qualitative analysis of white salt, a black residue indicates the presence of Acetate anionic radical. What is the underlying reaction/process behind this change? Thank you for your time.

$\begingroup$ Just about any organic compound turns black on heating. $\endgroup$ – Ivan Neretin Feb 2 at 7:09

$\begingroup$ I'd say it is halfway to elemental carbon. See, not every reaction out there can be written as one nice and simple equation. This one can't. $\endgroup$ – Ivan Neretin Feb 2 at 7:13
