Elimination reactions are frequent in organic chemistry. They mostly involve conversion of halo hydrocarbons to alkenes or alkynes.
E1 eliminations proceed through a carbocation intermediate, while E2 eliminations have a single-step, anti-peri-planar mechanism. E1cb elimination requires a strong electron withdrawing group at the alpha position.
Different bases like t-BuOK, NaNH2, alc. KOH perform different types of elimination. We also observe Satyzeff elimination and Hoffmann elimination.
