2015 Moderator Election

On Stack Exchange, we believe the core moderators should come from the community, and be elected by the community itself through popular vote. We hold regular elections to determine who these community moderators will be.

Community moderators are accorded the highest level of privilege on our community, and should themselves be exemplars of positive behavior and leaders within the community.

Our general criteria for moderators is as follows:

  • patient and fair
  • leads by example
  • shows respect for their fellow community members in their actions and words
  • open to some light but firm moderation to keep the community on track and resolve (hopefully) uncommon disputes and exceptions

Every election has three phases:

  1. Nomination
  2. Primary
  3. Election

Please participate in the moderator elections by voting, and perhaps even by nominating yourself to be a community moderator!

This election ended Jun 23 '15 at 20:00.

Hello,

my name is Martin and I joined this site about a year ago. Since my identity is no secret for those willing to find out, I will keep it short. I hold a doctorate degree with most of my experience in computational chemistry. Currently Japan is my home, where working as a post-doctoral fellow gives me the liberty to partake on this site.

First and foremost, I love this site and made a lot of friends here. I care about this site, especially keeping the quality high and the noise low. I dedicated a fair share of time to that endeavour and I will continue doing so. Occasionally I contribute some answers - the main purpose of this site - and I plan on continuing so. As a user I have also been benefiting from great advice here, which tells me that the system works.

Apart from this, I consider myself to be a regular in chat - a place where almost nothing is off-topic. If you have any questions, I welcome you to ask them there.

I have never been in a moderation position before, so I am not quite sure what to expect, but I believe I am able to learn an grow with the job. Although no one ever really can say what the future holds, I am here to stay. Thank you for your consideration.

  • $\begingroup$ Now the big guy come!! $\endgroup$ – Simon-Nail-It Jun 10 '15 at 13:45
  • $\begingroup$ Martin, I've always wondered about that. I myself have yet to secure a Math PhD position, but I always though you would be really busy researching. Like a full time job that continues when you go home lol. And I imagined that for post-docs more or less the same is expected. Where do you obtain all the time you invest in this site? Or is it part of your post-doc? Anyway, Martin, you have my vote for sure. I also thought about candidating myself, but as of late I'm not sure whether I actually have the time for it. Cheers! $\endgroup$ – Jori Jun 10 '15 at 13:53
  • $\begingroup$ @Jori I think every PhD is different. For me there was sometimes no stop after leaving the office and sometimes there was just cleaning up after failed attempts. Failing and cleaning up and trying is always part of the process and working as a post-doc gives me the freedom to choose my schedule quite liberally. Also I don't really have any restrictions and my supervisor does not mind how I spent some of my downtime. After all I do also find a lot of help here, and inspiration. And sometimes it's just a good way to regain focus. And I know I am not the only one using SE it like this... $\endgroup$ – Martin - マーチン Jun 10 '15 at 16:31

  • $\begingroup$ Huzzah! Martin has nominated!!! $\endgroup$ – user15489 Jun 10 '15 at 18:22
  • $\begingroup$ "I dedicated a fair share of time to that endeavour" I believe this is the understatement of the year. You have dedicated your time and most importantly, your attention, to keeping the site orderly. $\endgroup$ – jonsca Jun 10 '15 at 22:58
  • $\begingroup$ @jonsca I felt a pleasant tingling running down my back, when I read your statement. Thanks you very much :D $\endgroup$ – Martin - マーチン Jun 11 '15 at 4:06
  • $\begingroup$ Agree with jonsca very much. I think a large chunk of the stuff we have handled is because you found it. I'm happy to see you standing in the election! $\endgroup$ – ManishEarth Jun 11 '15 at 8:59
  • $\begingroup$ You have surely shown every quality that a mod might require. For instance, the response over here. Good luck! $\endgroup$ – user223679 Jun 13 '15 at 9:50

Hello! I am Matthew, but on Chem.SE I go by ringo! I would be honored to moderate this site, and as such, this is my nomination. It is important to know a candidate's strengths and weaknesses, so I'll be outright with mine:

Strengths:

  • I am dedicated – though I have not been answering and asking questions recently, I have been checking in daily, performing review tasks, and continuing to contribute in other ways; also, I have been studying organic chemistry in my free time so that I can contribute more knowledge
  • I am knowledgeable – with a background in chemistry, I can understand the questions and answers on the site and how they should be approached
  • I love order – being elected a moderator would allow me to assist in keeping this community running as smoothly as it has been, as well as to make improvements

Weaknesses:

  • I am inexperienced as a moderator – there would most certainly be things that I would need to learn if elected, but I love learning!
  • I am relatively new – many of the incredible people on Chem.SE have been active longer than I have and are more knowledgeable, but I am working hard to catch up!

Thank you for considering me as a candidate!

  • $\begingroup$ Can you elaborate on "continuing to contribute in other ways"? $\endgroup$ – user223679 Jun 13 '15 at 10:03
  • $\begingroup$ Upvoting and downvoting, commenting, editing, and flagging posts that need flagging. $\endgroup$ – ringo Jun 13 '15 at 17:15

Greetings All,

My name is Jonathan. I have been one of the pro-tempore mods on the site during the beta and have been a member from the beginning. Many of you already know that, but just in the interest of any newcomers.

As a user, I have been active on many of the science-oriented sites for a few years now, and I understand the nuances that make a science site different from one that is chiefly focused on technology. I feel passionate about striking a healthy balance between research-level questions and well-asked layperson/student ones.

I have been moderating with SE for about 3.5 years now, as a pro tempore on Healthcare IT and Libraries and as an elected moderator on Web Applications (12/13 to present). I have a passion for keeping the sites clean and helping direct the curation of the valuable information that SE is assembling for present askers and future learners.

Most of my chemistry education took place in the last century, but I still have a passion for the material. I believe I know enough to make decisions regarding whether questions are on-topic, and certainly know to defer to the community as needed.

Thank you all for your consideration!

  • $\begingroup$ I ran out of room, but I will be happy to answer the survey questions, and any information you seek is yours for the asking. $\endgroup$ – jonsca Jun 9 '15 at 23:33
  • $\begingroup$ Our fearless leader, finally. I love it how you state that your chemistry education is from the last century - genius. $\endgroup$ – Martin - マーチン Jun 10 '15 at 3:27
  • $\begingroup$ Another great nomination! $\endgroup$ – user15489 Jun 10 '15 at 6:40
  • $\begingroup$ Thanks goodness! I thought you'd never nominate! tears of happiness rolling down the face $\endgroup$ – M.A.R. ಠ_ಠ Jun 10 '15 at 8:04
  • $\begingroup$ A great nomination as I always see you everywhere $\endgroup$ – Simon-Nail-It Jun 10 '15 at 9:58
  • $\begingroup$ Is there a reason for you not being available on chat? Your profile says we can reach out to you over there. $\endgroup$ – user223679 Jun 13 '15 at 10:00
  • $\begingroup$ @user223679 That's a bit of a vestige from a time when I was able to be in chat more regularly. Unfortunately, from a practical side, the SE chat software doesn't allow one to persist in a room and/or remain pingable for an extended length of time. I would be happy to start popping in there at regular intervals, but I regret that I don't have time to join the full-on conversation due to other responsibilities. $\endgroup$ – jonsca Jun 15 '15 at 2:04

LordStryker here!

Many of you may know me. I tend to camp out in chat a lot getting to know everyone. I've been a somewhat active member of Chem:SE since day 1, supporting the launch of the site in Area 51, and consequently becoming user 14 for this site. None of these things qualify me for the position but it establishes a historical context for my involvement in this wonderful community.

I believe I would be a good candidate for this position because I have witnessed and partaken in the growth and evolution of a place many of us call home. I bring to the table a commitment and passion that would benefit this site. I work well with others, particularly well-established users including our pro-tem mods. I don't harbor a long list of contributed questions and answers but I do try to submit quality content, sometimes near production-level content.

It is simply amazing how far we have come since the very beginning. Elected or not, I love all of you and I don't plan on going anywhere. See you in chat!

  • $\begingroup$ Another great nominee! $\endgroup$ – user15489 Jun 9 '15 at 19:21
  • $\begingroup$ I love you when I see you on chat. You have stayed at the chat section for like days $\endgroup$ – Simon-Nail-It Jun 10 '15 at 9:55
  • $\begingroup$ If you become a mod, would this kind of anger be controlled? $\endgroup$ – user223679 Jun 13 '15 at 9:42
  • $\begingroup$ "Anger" is such a stretch here but most certainly :) $\endgroup$ – LordStryker Jun 13 '15 at 13:27

Hi, I'm Manish.

I've been with Chem.SE from the start, and am really happy to see how far it's reached!

I was at odds with myself whether or not I should stand in this election but it occurred to me that I'll never have the time to contribute content to this site; moderation is the way I think I can help best!

Why I'm a good candidate:

  • I've been a pro-tem mod for this site from the beginning. I know the community and am familiar with how moderation works here
  • I've been a mod on Physics for more than a year.
  • I've been quite active on the mother meta in the past and am familiar with the network wide policies
  • I also help moderate the online community of the Rust programming language.

Why I'm not a good candidate:

  • I'm not a chemist. I'm a physics student, and may or may not have plans. This never affected my ability to moderate though.
  • I'm quite busy. I've had to cut down on participation on Stack Exchange due to my courseload and open source participation. I still moderate, though, and I expect that to continue.
  • $\begingroup$ Oops, I had assumed that the pro-tem moderators would continue to serve. Well, let's say that I think you'd be a good moderator. $\endgroup$ – Geoff Hutchison Jun 8 '15 at 23:27
  • $\begingroup$ You've been around since the beginning, Manish, and have seen this site through it's infancy. You are certainly a good candidate for moderator. $\endgroup$ – bobthechemist Jun 9 '15 at 0:14
  • $\begingroup$ Manish has been an extremely diligent moderator. I can't speak to his full participation on Chemistry, but he has been kind in all of his interactions with me, and has taught me quite a bit about moderation. $\endgroup$ – hichris123 Jun 9 '15 at 1:29
  • $\begingroup$ I believe that you will be a good candidate. Typically do I not think that a good knowledge of chemistry is needed to moderate. $\endgroup$ – Dylan Spano Jun 9 '15 at 3:17
  • $\begingroup$ Yes, I agree wholeheartedly with this nomination - it would be great to see Manish continue in this role. $\endgroup$ – user15489 Jun 9 '15 at 4:20
  • $\begingroup$ I think current 3 moderators are doing great job. So they should continue. $\endgroup$ – Freddy Jun 9 '15 at 8:18
  • $\begingroup$ I think you be a good one as you know how to be a mod, just brush up a little bit of your knowledge on Chemistry and it will be okay $\endgroup$ – Simon-Nail-It Jun 9 '15 at 13:36
  • $\begingroup$ @Freddy For that, the third moderator has to nominate. $\endgroup$ – user223679 Jun 10 '15 at 14:37
  • $\begingroup$ @user223679 We have 3 mods. $\endgroup$ – Freddy Jun 11 '15 at 5:58
  • $\begingroup$ @Freddy And only 2 of them have nominated. $\endgroup$ – user223679 Jun 13 '15 at 9:34

This election is complete.
